Reading Challenge!

I am challenging my students and parents!  Please take a picture of your child reading at home in their favorite place every night!  Students will have their picture added to the blog and I will also make a weekly collage of our class pictures.  You may email or bring hardcopy to class!  I'll be sending home a letter of reminder on Friday!!

National Counselor's Week!

Our counselor that serves pre-k through second grade is Mrs. Clause.  When you hear the song Everything is Awesome from the Lego movie, you think of Mrs. Clause!  Everything she does is awesome and she really cares about the students!

We made some bucket filler cards for Mrs. Clause today in writing!  Here are some of the writings!

Newest Addition

My husband recently bought a bunch of woodworking tools.  Not sure what they are all called but he has begun a few projects I've had in mind for a while!  Here's a bench that I had wanted in my classroom.  I'm hoping that he will be making 3 more benches and a few other things!!  Here are some pictures!

Some Pictures

My blog is having some difficulties.  I added these pictures but they are not posting.  So, here's some pictures!

Academic Updates

--> Here is what we are learning next week:

Phonics: We began unit 9 in Phonics.  Unit 9 introduces the closed syllable  rule.  Closed syllables are words that have one vowel and must be closed in by consonants.  We continue to review our r controlled vowels:  ar, or, er, ir, and ur.  Our trick words that we will learn about this week are see, between and each.  We will also learn about vowels teams this week:  oi, oy.  I will be sending home a packet on Unit 9 at the beginning of the week.  Please do some of these activities throughout the week.

Reading: We are continuing Retelling through the retell rope!  We are going to read Winter's Gift.  We will retell the story with Characters, Setting, Problem, Beginning, Next, Then, Finally and the Solution!  We have already gone through retelling with Jan Brett's Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Hat, The Mitten and Bear Snores On.  We are also working on this daily in our Reading Groups.  The students are allowed to use dry erase markers to write on the Guided Reading table.  They stop after each page and retell through writing on the table.  They use character names, specific setting and the events in order from first to last.  We are also going to learn about Sammy the Summarizer this week.  This is part of a program called Reciprocal Teaching.  This is the final piece of Reciprocal Teaching.  They have learned about Penelope the Predictor, Clara the Clarifier and Quincy the Questioner.  This program allows students to have discussions about the books they are reading and ensures those discussions are meaningful.  It helps students gain more understanding of comprehension before, during and after reading!!

Math: We will learn how to use graphing pieces to cover a design and read a graph.  We will be introduced to the ordinal position of 26.  We will learn how to write money amounts using a cents sign with pennies and dimes.  At the end of the week we will learn about dividing squares in halves and reviewing how to write the fraction 1/2.  We continue with our Math Rotations.  They work with me on the new concept, review the concept with Mrs. Rowles, Mimio Math interactive and independent math that involves critical thinking.

Writing: We have transitioned from storytelling to writing books on our expertise. This week we are going to learn about using partners to help them add or take away parts in their books that do not belong in their teaching books.  This will take a few days to do as they will be partnering up with other students and revising their pieces.  We will review our goals for writing.  Some of the goals include:  spelling trick words correctly according to our word wall, adding capital letters to beginning of our sentences, making sure there is punctuation at the end of each sentence, making we are writing like authors do when writing teaching books, matching our words to our pictures and adding more to our pages or chapters that need to be included.

Academic Updates/Reminders!

We had a fun filled week with a lot of new learning and review! We started new units in Phonics, Reading, Writing and Math!

I had several students who said how excited they were about learning new things! It does so much for a teacher to hear those precious words. I hope everyone had a wonderful Winter Break filled with many blessings.

Swimming started this week and everything went smoothly. The whole class was prepared and followed all of the important rules.

Here is what we are learning next week:

Phonics: We began unit 8 in Fundations. I introduced the r controlled vowels this week- ar, ir, er, ur, and or. We also learned about blends found at the beginning and end of words. We learned that blends are different than digraphs. Blends can be pulled apart but still have the same sounds. Digraphs cannot be pulled apart and have the same sound. We learned how to spell would, could and should trick words. We spelled these words with our bodies and the students really enjoyed this. We talked about practicing those words at school in our writing and at home. We began using blends bracelets to remind us daily about all of the different blends and how to read them in words. Your child will have a different bracelet each day with a new blend, please look for those and ask about them!

Reading: We will begin learning how to sequence stories by using the book The Hat by Jan Brett. We will continue to work on Bear Snores On sequencing. This will build on our character and setting learning. After we have learned how to sequence stories in order, we will begin to learn about Sammy the Summarizer! We will begin our unit on Penguins. Each student will have their own Penguin book where they will learn about Penguin diets, habitats, bodies, baby penguins, predators and penguin lives. We will begin with a KWL chart that talks about what we KNOW, WANT to know and one thing we LEARNED!

Math: We will learn how to create a design with a line of symmetry and identifying the line. This will lead to learning how to identify one half of a whole and how to write the fraction 1/2. We will also learn how to write a two-digit number for a set of objects. This will lead to comparing and ordering two-digit numbers. We will begin a fun game of snowman throw in math. Students will throw the snowflakes on the snowman that have numbers and whatever number the snowflake lands on they will fill in a ten frame with the snowflakes. Once, they have learned how to make numbers in a ten frame they will start adding numbers in ten frames.

Writing: We began our new unit on our Non-Fiction books. We have transitioned from storytelling to writing books on our expertise. They have brainstormed things that they are experts in. We read a few books that are good examples: Sharks, Planets and Star Wars books that are National Geographic Readers. These books give us good examples of what to include in our pieces.

Social Studies/Science: We began learning about Martin Luther King, Jr. We will learn about his "I have a dream" speech. We will learn about the words that he used in his speech and what their definitions are. We will write about our own dreams.

Please be sure to remember swim clothes on Wednesday. Bundle up with coats, gloves and hats this week!
