Homework Reminder

Please be sure to check your child's bag or Friday Folder.  The homework for the next week is either making the Habitat Mobile or a Habitat Digraph in a shoe box.

Way to Go Pintos!

We have several football players in our class and several mini cheerleaders!  Are football team is undefeated this year, Yay!!  I hope everyone was able to make it out to the game last night and see our mini cheerleaders!  This week was crazy, it started off warm then quickly changed to very cold and rainy.  There are some northern states that are getting snow already!  We are not convinced to turn on the heat yet and we actually opened our windows at school yesterday.  The kids are doing so great at our routines and really settling into getting to know each other in the classroom and other classes.  Here are some photos of what they have been doing this week:

Short but Fun Week!

This week has been great!  We have begun science this week and the students are loving it!  Students brought home some small books about living and non-living things/science projects that you can do with your child.  We will be working on the color blue and doing many different activities with blue!  We have read some great books, "Dear Mr. Blueberry" and "Blueberries for Sal".  We wrote our own letters to Mr. Blueberry and counting blueberries!  We learned different ways of making six and seven.  We used a lot of counters and cubes to make those numbers!  We are still doing some review in handwriting and spelling but we are moving well into this so that we can begin our spelling units very soon.

We began writing stories in writing and we will end our writing unit and begin reviewing some writing rules.

I am so happy that all of your first graders came this week to open house and to the first two days of school.

We did a lot of review on the rules of the classroom, cafeteria, hallway, gym and bathroom/water fountains!  I am so happy to have all of the students that I have.  I know this year will be great and we will learn a lot!

Math
We are going to be reviewing numbers throughout this week and reviewing what they learned in kindergarten. I will be assessing what we need to review again so that our foundations are strong before we begin anything new.

Handwriting/Spelling
We will be reviewing all letters and the way we write those letters.  As we begin practicing those letters, we will also be reviewing each letter sound to be sure we have the strength of the phonics portion in place before we begin our spelling units!

Phonics
We will have a color of the week and we will be practicing handwriting and spelling while reviewing all of our colors.  Your child will participate in a daily activity that includes the color of the week.  Our color this week is RED!  If possible please have your child wear red so that we can be surrounded by our color throughout the week!

Reading
We will begin to introduce the idea of reading to self.  There will be several activities that the students can participate in during our reading portion of the day in which they will learn ways to read to themself!  Your child will help make a chart that will be displayed in the classroom on how they can read to self.

Science/Social Studies
We will continue to focus on ways to be friends inside the classroom and throughout the year.  Your child has been working on a cafeteria expectation lunch box and will begin working on a friendship book.

Star of the Week
At the end of the week, the student with the most "Caught Being Good" tickets will be able to be the star of the week the following week.  The star of the week entails a bulletin board that displays pictures of the student that will be brought from home and different cool facts about that student.  They will make a "Star of the Week" book and the class will help write this book, as well!

This week the students will be able to check out books on Thursday, we should have a lot of fun!!

If there are any sheets that need to be signed by parents/guardians, please remember to turn those in next week.

I will see everyone on Monday morning ready to learn!!

Last Day of Work AND New day at California

My last day of work will be Tuesday of next week (7/31/12)!  I will be sad to say goodbye, but sooo excited to start preparing for all of those first graders coming into my classroom in about three short weeks!  I cannot wait to begin on Wednesday!  I have had a lot of very nice cards sent to me with kind words from various employees and branches and a few gift certificates to buy some things for my classroom.  Needless to say, I have convinced James to take me to Columbia for a small afternoon trip tomorrow to do some shopping!
